Early Treatment
Though an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, there is an ideal time period to begin treatment. Beginning treatment at this time ensures the optimum result and the least amount of time and expense. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic concerns or by the age of 7. At this early age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but vigilant examination can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment.
Early evaluation provides both timely detection of problems and greater opportunity for more effective treatment. Prudent intervention guides growth and development, preventing serious problems later. If orthodontic intervention is not necessary, Dr. Duffy, along with your general dentist, can carefully monitor growth and development and begin treatment when it is ideal.
Some of the most direct results of interceptive treatment are:
- Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
- Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
- Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
- Preserving space for unerupted teeth
- Reducing the need for tooth removal
- Reducing treatment time with braces
Palatal Expanders
What is an expander?
Your new appliance is called a palatal expander. It is designed to widen your upper jaw which is necessary to correct a crossbite or to create more space for your permanent teeth.
How does it work?
The upper jaw is made up of two bones. The expander separates the two bones in order to widen the upper jaw. Expansion is achieved by turning the appliance as instructed.
How often should I turn my expander?
The amount of expansion required is different for each person. The treatment plan designed by Dr. Duffy will customize the amount of expansion needed.
How will I feel?
You may experience pressure or tenderness near the bridge of the nose and towards the cheekbones. It is recommended that TylenolŪ or AdvilŪ be taken for any discomfort. You will probably notice a space develop between the upper front teeth. This is normal and is a sign that the palatal bones are separating. You may experience a higher salivary flow and may need to eat a softer diet the first few days.
How long is the expander worn?
Typically the expander is left in place for six months after expansion is achieved. This allows time for the palate to stabilize.
